Originally from Philadelphia, she started singing at age 7 and joined her first band at 14. After attending the University of Cincinnati and Kansas College, she started touring the US and Canada with her own band. In 1980 she settled in Orlando and performed for 6 years in the areas top nightspots. This is where she was discovered by Joe Sample of the Jazz Crusaders. In 1986 she was the featured vocalist with the Jazz Crusaders singing "Street Life" and "Burning up the Carnival". In 1987 she moved to LA where she worked with Tight Squeeze and did session work for Jeff Perris, Polygram, Evan Pace, Chrysalis and Barry Fosman who produced the Music for "Fame".
